A Great Paintjob: What It Takes

Here are a few tips in giving your house a makeover:

Check The Weather First

First of all, make sure there isn't a probable chance of rain or heavy winds.  The ideal paint finish is best achieved in dry conditions between 50°C and 90°C.  The best time of day is in the middle - somewhere between the dew of early morning and the setting moisture of evening.

Make Ready The Painting Surface

Preparing the surface is the first and most important step if you want a tidy and sharp paintjob.  For wood surfaces, be certain it is smooth, dirt-free, and entirely dry.  Also, make any needed repairs to structural surfaces before painting.

  • For removing dirt, foreign particles, and old paint peelings, use a paint scraper, wire brush, or sandpaper.
  • For extremely grimy wood, scrub it down with a diluted cleaning solution.  Be sure to spray it down with a pressured hose and let it dry completely.
  • If there has been previous slight moisture damage, dry the wood fully and coat it with a heavy duty water repellent.  Let dry again, and further coat with an oil-based primer.
  • To keep wood further safe from moisture damage, coat all wood ends with a waterproofing sealer and apply a primer coat to the faces of all unpainted boards.  If you know that the wood is subject to high temperatures and humidity, either buy treated wood if you are going to build first, or, treat the wood yourself with a coat of wood preservative.
